Joss Whedon Confirms Some Stuff About “The Avengers 2” and “S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Joss Whedon, the man beloved by avid comic book fans and casual movie goers alike, had a sit down with MTV to answer some questions about a few widely known projects of his, namely The Avengers 2 and the S.H.I.E.L.D. television show. According to Joss (we’re on first name basis), the script for The Avengers 2 is just a few months away from completion. He says that the key to the blockbuster sequel is to get deeper and not bigger, which I took to mean that he’s not looking to add a lot more to the hero roster, but rather explore the relationships that already exist there. Yes, they were able to come together to overcome an intergalactic obstacle, but they’re still not a cohesive response team and their next threat looks to be far more menacing than anything they’ve faced before, either together or in their solo films. Things were a little shaky between Iron Man and Captain America the last time we saw them, and I believe we’ll see a lot more confrontation between those two the next time we see them together.

As for the S.H.I.E.L.D. television show, here’s what Joss had to say:

”It’s got to be bigger than your average cop show. But at the end of the day, it’s about the peripheral people… The whole point of the show is that even with all these big things, the little things matter. It’s about people who don’t have super powers. There will be some people with powers, there will be FX, and there will be the spectacle of science-fiction storytelling — but all played on a very human, small level.”

If I read that correctly, it looks to be a genre bending science fiction cop show, which I’m totally on board for. Of course this whole premise is wrought with promises of incredible cameos, but I like the fact that Joss Whedon will be running the show because he’ll know not to go too heavy with it. He knows how to orchestrate small scale stories that strike the right chord with the viewers, having already worked on far too many cult hit shows in his past life before courting Marvel. Also, I’m sure he’s never seen the type of budget (relative to television shows because The Avengers obviously cost a lot of money) that ABC is willing to throw at him, so he can work in a lot of scenarios that doesn’t restrict his creativity much.

Yeah…and Agent Coulson is apparently not dead. Joss says S.H.I.E.L.D. will be taking place after the events of The Avengers and we know that Clark Gregg will be reprising his role for the show. So two plus two equals Agent Coulson not being dead and I don’t know what that means just yet (Clones? Twins?). I guess that’s cool, but it also seems like a cop-out. And how will Nick Fury explain this to both Steve Rogers and Tony Stark?

There’s one clear answer that I could think of: blame it on his eye-patch.
